Miracles of the Human Body

Marlon Furtado

David knew enough about the human body that he said, “I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:14) I’ve always been fascinated with the human body. When I attended Chiropractic school, it added to my learning that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Here are several of those wonders. This blog is not intended to be an anatomy or physiology lesson, but a means of showing the marvelous design that God first created and now reproduces in the dark confines of our mothers.

  • Two sets of teeth – baby teeth while our mouth is small; a larger set for a larger mouth
  • Tongue – When we eat food, the tongue automatically moves the food around to be chewed well.
  • Epiglottis – We have one throat with two pipes, one to the stomach and the other to the lungs. To direct food to the correct tube when we swallow, this tiny flap of cartilage closes off the airway.
  • Muscles – There are two main types of muscles, those under conscious control, regulating movement of the body (walking, lifting) and those not under conscious control, regulating internal body functions (breathing, heartbeat, blood vessel tension). Even the smallest movements require thousands of signals to and from the brain to have some muscles contract and others to relax at the same time. Otherwise, our movements would be jerky instead of smooth.
  • Digestion – our stomach forms hydrochloric acid and there is a circular muscle at its far end to keep the food in the stomach long enough to become a mush-like substance, and then the muscle relaxes to allow the food to move into the small intestine, where nourishment can be pulled into the bloodstream.
  • Eyes – not one, but two so we can perceive depth. Each one has muscles attached to the outside of the globe to move it.
  • Ears – To hear sounds, airwaves must be converted to mechanical movement, then to fluid dynamics, and finally to an electrical impulse that our brain can interpret. Having two ears allows us to determine where the sound is coming from.
  • Reproduction – It is amazing that men and women are designed to reproduce. For a woman to develop her child inside her is nothing short of a miracle.
  • Cell – Our cells use oxygen and glucose to produce energy. Their waste product, carbon dioxide, is carried away by the blood.
  • Lungs – In the short time for you to take a breath, your lungs are able to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen in your blood.
  • Heart – This little pump works for an average of 70 years, pushing about 2,000 gallons of blood daily through its chambers (which is enough to fill an 8-by-10-foot swimming pool). That’s over 2.5 billion pumps in a lifetime.
  • Immune System – The fact that we have chemical sentries circulating in our blood to recognize and neutralize foreign invaders amazes me. Each of us would get a lot sicker more often if we didn’t have this system.
  • Skin – The skin that covers our frame is able to heal itself after a cut, abrasion, and other injuries.
  • Bones – Our 206 bones provide a solid framework and allow the muscles something to move. In addition, some bones form hemoglobin, which allows the red blood cell to carry oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Obviously, these parts don’t always do their jobs without problems. In those times we pray for healing and we seek out people who can help fix them or replace them. But even if those things work, it is because of how God designed our bodies.

If God’s work of human and animal bodies is marvelous, how much more is His plan of redemption through Jesus? These bodies eventually fail us, but Jesus never does. Regardless how healthy you are, eventually you’ll die. Be sure to invite Him into your life before that happens. There’s no one other than Jesus who overcame death.
