Steve Bates selected first for Oregon Senate seat and receives endorsement of Former Senator Alan Olsen

Steve Bates

At the Oregon Senate District 20 Precinct Committee Person Nominating Convention held on January 23rd, Steve Bates received 59.88% of the vote which was the largest vote count of any of the 10 candidates.  This vote qualified Steve Bates as the first nominee on the slate of nominees to be vetted by the Clackamas and Marion county commissions.

Steve Bates stated:  “I am amazed and grateful for the support given to me by my fellow Precinct Committee Persons with this vote.  I am truly honored and I look forward to the county commission appointment process.”
Several calls and emails of congratulations were received by Steve Bates Saturday.  This included a telephone call from Former Senator Alan Olsen.  He gave Steve Bates this statement to share:  “I withheld my endorsement to allow the Precinct Committee Persons to make their selections.  Now that the PCP’s have spoken, I endorse Steve Bates as the best nominee to take my place.”
Steve Bates has publicly shared, if appointed,  his intention to continue to support issues favored by Senator Olsen such as:  community college funding, replacing the Clackamas County Court House, reclaiming the Willamette Falls Locks and the Willamette Falls Legacy Project.  Bates has also outlined his desire to pursue solutions to traffic congestion on Oregon State Highways in Clackamas County, military veterans issues, fully funding and staffing the Oregon State Police and seeking a statewide policy concerning mental health advocacy.
The Nominating Convention voted to send a slate of three nominees to the commissioners.  The other nominees are John Lee, Jr. of Boring and Former Representative Bill Kennemer of Canby.  The commissioners will select one of the three nominees at a public meeting yet to be scheduled.  According to the Secretary of State office, the commissioners must make an appointment by February 9th.
Senate District 20 is primarily within Clackamas County.  There are 105,426 registered voters in Clackamas County with 63 in Marion County.  Based upon this data, the Secretary of State has deemed that each of the five Clackamas County Commissioners will have 21 votes and each of the three Marion County Commissioners will have .33 votes.
