Vance Day Condemns Attempts to Intimidate, Coerce U.S. Supreme Court Justices, Challenges Opponent Ortega To Do The Right Thing and Join Him

REDMOND, OREGON — Today, Vance Day, candidate for the Oregon Court of Appeals position #3, issued the following statement in reaction to the intentional efforts of protesters to intimidate Supreme Court justices at their homes following the leak of a draft opinion to overturn the 1973 Supreme Court decision Roe versus Wade:

“After reviewing numerous news accounts of the recent actions being instigated by demonstrators at the homes of Supreme Court Justices, I hereby officially condemn the apparent efforts to intimidate and coerce justices in order to alter the outcome of a case before the court. I also call upon the President of the United States and his Justice Department to immediately gather evidence to fully investigate any possible violations of 18 US Code 1503 prohibiting such conduct.”

Demonstrators have reportedly visited the private residences of Supreme Court Associate Justices Bret Kavanaugh, Samuel Alito, and Chief Justice John Roberts to scream at all hours of the day and night to terrorize their families at the same time that the Court is actively deliberating on the case. Justice Alito and his family have also reportedly had to seek refuge in a separate undisclosed location due to security concerns. Vance Day, Candidate for Position 3, Oregon Court of Appeals, added:

“The judicial branch is not a policymaking or political branch of the government. Such a blatant assault on the independence of our judiciary is an affront to every judge in every court and must receive the strongest possible condemnation. The ‘anything goes’ tactics employed in the streets of Portland to obtain a desired outcome from a court must be denounced by all officers of the court and public officials who have any respect for the U.S. and Oregon Constitutions and the role of judges enshrined in them. It is a judge’s job to consider only the facts and the law to come to the most legally correct decision, not the most politically correct decision to please powerful elites or mobs in the street.”

Day, a former circuit court judge in Marion County, added:

“I hereby challenge my opponent, Darleen Ortega, who has said almost nothing during this entire campaign, to do the right thing and join me in condemning these despicable intimidation tactics aimed at members of our nation’s highest court, and their families.”

ABOUT VANCE DAY FOR JUDGE

Vance Day is a candidate for Position 3 on the Oregon Court of Appeals, a statewide, nonpartisan position. The election will be held May 17 2022.

Day is a sixth-generation descendant of Oregon Trail pioneers, born and raised in the Willamette Valley. He graduated magna cum laude from Warner Pacific University and earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Willamette University College of Law in 1991. An accomplished trial lawyer, he has tried over 300 bench and jury trials. In addition, Vance served the State of Oregon for nearly four years as the Chairman of the Oregon Republican Party.

In 2011 Day was appointed to serve as a Circuit Court Judge and was elected to a full six-year term in Nov. 2012. In 2012, Judge Day started a veteran’s treatment court in Salem, Oregon, to target the root causes of veterans’ criminal behavior, such as homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse, by bringing together the prosecutor, the defense attorney, the judge, other veterans, treatment providers, mentors, and support teams to work together to help veterans make a fresh start. While Day was running the program, there was a zero-recidivism rate.

Upon completion of his term as a circuit court judge, Vance Day was recruited by the board of the Christian men’s ministry Promise Keepers to help rebuild the organization, eventually serving as president of the organization. Under his leadership, the organization was revitalized and now ministers to hundreds of thousands of men globally.

Most recently, Day travels the length and breadth of Oregon on behalf of the James Madison Center for Free Speech, meeting with various organizations, churches, and community groups to discuss our constitutional liberties and how we can responsibly respond to government overreach.
