Evolving Toward Godhood?

Marlon Furtado

I normally don’t like to speak ill of various religious practices, because the issue is Jesus Christ and not working for salvation, but receiving Him and salvation as a free gift. But there are some that sound almost Christian but are actually far from it. Remember, Satan is after the souls of people. He doesn’t care what kind of lies he has to tell them to accomplish that. He will go so far as appearing to be nice and moral if that’s what it takes to fool people. The Bible says, “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness.” (2 Corinthians 11:14–15)

We are reminded that the Apostle Paul said that in the end times, people would turn to teachers who would tickle their ears. “They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” (2 Timothy 4:4–5)

This subject isn’t just a “my religion is better than yours,” but Christianity brings clear evidence that it is truthful and, therefore, far better than anything else on the docket. Before I mention the specific religion that I’m talking about, let’s review Satan’s conversation in the Garden in Genesis three. After implying that God was not being honest with Adam and Eve, he appealed to their pride. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Genesis 3:5)

Most false religions claim that the issue is not truth, but sincerity, claiming that “all roads lead to God.” Some mention Jesus, but all false religions are works-based. In other words, you must live in such a way that you deserve God’s salvation. Some of the Eastern mysticism religions promise that if you follow them, you will find the “infinity of your inner self, and you will become one with the universe.” What does that even mean?

When you wrap up the “human potential movement” in a religious bag, you get Mormonism. I’m not saying that Mormons are necessarily immoral people, but they are following a religion that the devil has foisted on people by appealing to their human pride. It tickles “what their itching ears want to hear.” (2 Timothy 4:3)

The basic teaching of Mormonism is that, if you are a good male LDS, you will become a god and be given your own space to create your own universe, just as the god of this universe has done. If you are a good female LDS, you will be able to have billions of “spirit babies” with your god-husband to inhabit his universe.

In Mormon teaching, they have a saying, “As God once was, man is. As God is, man will become.” In other words, God was once a man, but He has evolved to godhood. He is still evolving, but a good LDS can get on the same path and evolve to godhood. Sounds a lot like what Satan said in the Garden.

It feeds our pride to think that we are capable of being God. That was the devil’s problem, too. He thought he could challenge God for His throne. “How you have fallen from Heaven, O morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High’ But you are brought down to the grave, to the depths of the pit.” (Isaiah 14:12–15)

Not only that, but Mormonism teaches that Jesus is a created being, the brother of Lucifer the devil. Therefore, Mormons are not following the Jesus of the Bible. They are following a Jesus of their own making. Mormonism uses enough Christian terms in their literature to sound Christian, but their terms don’t mean the same thing as the Bible. But when you analyze it, it’s far from being the real thing.

You may think I’m cruel or arrogant to speak about Mormons this way. Remember I’m not attacking Mormons but Mormon-ism. There is much more that I could say about Mormon doctrine, but these are the BIG issues: the free gift of salvation, the Person of God, and the Deity of Jesus.

My desire is that you will not be swept in by the lies of the devil. Trust Jesus today. Your sin will ALWAYS disqualify you for deserving Heaven.
