Just How Important Are The 10 Commandments That God gave to Moses?

For thousands of years these commandments have been the backbone of the Judeo-Christian community and have been a part of many governments throughout the world and the basis for many legal systems.

Although these laws were given to Moses by God himself for the people of Israel, it’s important to note that Jesus the son of God affirmed these Commandments and said that he did not come to abolish these commands but rather to complete them.

Today secular culture calls not only God’s existence into question but pushes strongly to remove the word of God from our culture by relegating it to a myth or primitive thinking not suitable for enlightened people.

Many Christians espouse the separation of church and state because of how various kings and world leaders tried to assert God‘s authority through their own rule.

While I wholeheartedly agree that mixing any church organization with political power is a bad idea, an even worse idea is to remove God and his authority and his word from the elemental foundation of human governance.

God is primarily spiritual not organizational, a great surprise apparently to organized religion. The government without the fear of God unleashes all the horrors of hell upon its subjects, while a God-fearing government protects and defends its subjects and brings life instead of death to its constituents.

The reason why we have enjoyed such amazing status as a nation is, in fact, because our government, for the most part, has been God-fearing and held to many of the principles of God‘s commands in His word.

It is the reason why the USA has had such a powerful influence on the world in the 200 years that we have been a nation. Other nations that have respected God‘s laws have had similar positive influence on society.

But some nations who have broken from God‘s laws have brought absolute terror on their own people and on society in general.

The reason why so many people would like to live in the United States is actually because of the godly principles that we have held to: “Liberty and justice for all,” for example.

As we have held to God‘s character, He has blessed our nation with military strength and with financial accumulation of wealth. These are attractive to the world as well, but the underlying foundation that has given us these blessings over such a long period of time is undoubtedly the adherence to God‘s laws.

How would you like to live anywhere where the 10 Commandments or at least some of those 10 Commandments were not upheld and routinely discriminated against?

These 10 Commandments are some of the most important pieces of legislation that the world currently has even if many do not recognize that.

So don’t parrot what you’ve heard from secular sources who got it from the evil one that there should be a “separation of church and state”, when what they really want is to squeeze creator God out of every aspect of society. You definitely do not want a separation of God and state. A more accurate term for that is hell on earth.

Moses had asked to see God’s glory, which God graciously only answered in part but openly revealed His nature to Moses even while he was working on the second copy of the 10 Commandments. While Moses was carrying those tablets early in the morning God met him in the cloud and said this to him.

Exodus 34:6-7 “and He passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord the Lord the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.’”

In this revelation to Moses we see God’s compassion and graciousness on full display and of course we see it even more so as revealed in His son Jesus Christ who took on himself the sins of humanity on the cross.

That grace continues to amaze me and transform me day by day. But we also see on display the nature of God that He does not leave the guilty unpunished and in fact that breaking God’s law has consequences that stretch from generation to generations.

The effects of sin are still powerful and without submission to the power of the blood of Jesus can still affect us from generation to generation and it is easily seen in our society today.

While today’s church organizations have chosen not to talk very much about sin and judgment, it is still very much a part of life. In fact, it is a part of God‘s character and His nature to deal with sin most severely. After all, it is the destructive force which destroys and steals and harms His creation.

Jesus himself taught repentance from sin, as did John the Baptist in addition to all of God’s prophets, and more recently, Billy Graham, a well noted evangelist of our time.

We need to look at these basic 10 Commandments and to see how we stack up and to see if we have any repenting to do even as God’s children.
