Memorial Highway Sign destroyed in auto accident will not be replaced unless a $600 fee is paid to ODOT

Steve Bates, President of the Vietnam War Memorial Fund

In May of 2016, the Vietnam Veterans of America joined with the Boring Community in cooperation with the Sandy & Gresham Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts to honor the Wright family of Boring.  The Wright family lost two sons, George and James, who were killed in action in Vietnam.  Fallen Hero Memorial Highway signs were installed by ODOT on Highway 26 in Boring, just blocks from the family home.

The James Alfred Wright Memorial Highway Sign on Highway 26 was destroyed in an automobile accident in January 2023.
Steve Bates, President of the Vietnam War Memorial Fund was advised this week by ODOT that the James Wright sign will not be replaced by ODOT.  However, ODOT advised that if a fee of $600 is paid, the sign will be replaced.
The Board of Directors of the Vietnam War Memorial Fund have set up a special account to collect donations to cover this fee.
Steve Bates stated:  “In my communications with an ODOT representative, she advised that the Fallen Hero Memorial Highway signs are one and done signs.  They are designed to last 10 years and will be removed and discarded when they are in disrepair.  However, they can be replaced for a fee of $600.  As a result, we are asking the community to help replace the James Wright sign by making a donation.  The Wright brothers signs were erected with community donations in 2016.  We want to give the community an opportunity to be a part of this process.”
You can mail your donation to Vietnam War Memorial Fund – P O Box 1448 – Boring, Oregon  97009.  Be sure to make a notation on the check – James Wright Sign.
A donation can also be made by credit card at:  https://ocvvm.com/
