New Beginnings

2020 bore witness to the worst of mankind – and yet there was the occasional heroic moment, brief respite and minor miracle. You might have missed them if you only read the headlines. As the year turns over, a possible cure for the current plague appears on the horizon. Timing is everything – but one has to wonder!

Depending on ones location in the northwest – hysteria was either rampant or somewhat controlled. Even the “experts” used numbers with such wild abandon that those of us who took “bonehead math” in high school ended up just shaking our heads. We saw masks come into vogue so much so that designers were marketing them on the home shopping channels! Then, depending on whatever shortage (real or imagined) was thought to exist going to a grocery store might actually be hazardous. Statistics? Let me just say once again that even straight A math majors shook their heads. Undoubtedly, the most desirable health indicator to have in ones home was and still is a thermometer! The drug stores sold out of any kind of fever indicator in record breaking time.

Becoming painfully obvious was that this situation brought the worst in human behavior to the surface. The city I grew up in was looted, trashed and irreparably destroyed. I refuse to accept this as a symptom of Covid-19. Unforgivable, indeed was the bashing of law enforcement personnel and the insane rebirth of racial slurs. The knowledge of previous plagues in our countries collective history began to pale by comparison.

Then we come to a covid test – a diagnostic test – and look how long that took. If you had that test, you know how simple it was. We are now going to use an injectable vaccine originally created for a different deadly virus. It will hopefully be a cure for Covid-19. By now, any sane person wants to scream. Were we somehow set up? Believe me when I say, I wonder and I do. Looking back at AIDS – same story. Don’t look at the facts, don’t say it out loud – where is Elizabeth Taylor when we need her! How many times must we learn this lesson?

It would be one thing if this type of disease brought out research, caring and cures, however, with side effects such as prejudice, disrespect of law enforcement, destruction of city landmarks and buildings, rampant theft and the blatant return to the dark ages, what chance do we have? Angels in America? Yes, and they wear the uniforms of doctors and nurses. Even they had their hands tied until the governmental powers that be had wrung all the attention they could get out of a virus both deadly and devastating, that set our current population on its ear!

Pay attention people. Don’t take this lying down, possibly on a hospital bed! Yes, I hope our medical miracle workers go to town on this. However, we the people can realize our strength, support research, demand action and for everyone’s sake, support doctors and law enforcement! We need to choose humanity and hope what we don’t need to support is any idea that a genuine virus bears any relationship to racism and or law enforcement. Now that my soap box is beginning to show considerable wear and tear, I will happily store it in a corner of the closet. If you take away nothing else from this column, I leave you with this thought: you have the power and it’s one of the best things to have other than wine, gray hair and jeans!
