Opinion: Sonya Fischer is Out of Touch

In spite of record revenue, Clackamas County Commissioner Sonya Fischer knowingly approved unsustainable budgets in 2017 and 2018, leaving the taxpayers at least $12 million upside down. Managing a &1 billion budget is the most important aspect of the job, and she failed miserably. She’s on the May ballot, and is facing accountability from frustrated voters.

In 2018 Fischer voted to approve A Vehicle Registration Fee without a public vote. She later supported the ill-fated METRO housing bond, and METRO’s failed $5.5 billion transit tax. The housing bond has been a tremendous financial disappointment. (The tax was crushed by the voters.) Keeping in line with METRO, In May of 2021 she supported House Bill 3055 which guaranteed ODOT’s tolling scheme would be imposed on I-205. How many can afford $7.00 a day for a round trip across the Abernathy Bridge?

She’s voted for every tax and fee increase during her term; never supporting a public vote on any of them. Fischer reminds me of someone who has a credit card with no limits.

Aside from her policy fiascos, Fischer gave her partisan ally, former Chair Jim Bernard a pass for his outrageous personal attacks on residents who testified during meetings. In 2020 she led the way for the taxpayers to pay $25,000 in legal fees after Bernard admitted he was guilty of 2 ethics violations. Eventually Bernard relented and paid the money back.

During a time when we faced a pandemic, business shutdowns, and an ice storm, she spent uncounted hours and personal campaign money on an effort to remove Commissioner Mark Shull, someone she would never face in an election.

Fischer faces 2 strong challengers in the May 17th election, Ben West and Dana Allen Hindman. Both are business friendly candidates who are connected to the pulse of the County. I’m leaning towards Ben because of his resume which includes experience as a Wilsonville City Councilor.

The examples I’ve cited, and many others are preserved in meeting videos posted on the “Clackamas County Commission” website, and the “Sonya Fischer is Unelectable” Facebook page. During these tough times we need someone we can rely on. She’s clearly proven herself to be out of touch.
