Opinion: Sonya Fischer is Unelectable

During a recent County Board meeting Sonya Fischer announced she has only supported sustainable budgets during her time as a Commissioner. The claim is not true. In spite of record revenue Fischer knowingly approved unsustainable budgets in 2017 and 2018, leaving the taxpayers millions upside down. Managing a $1 billion budget is the most important aspect of the job, and she failed miserably.

Always looking to spend more money, She has voted for every tax and fee increase during her term. In 2018 Fischer voted to approve the Vehicle Registration Fee without a public vote. She also supported METRO’s huge $5.5 billion transit tax measure in 2020. It was rejected by the voters.

In May of 2021 she voted to endorse House Bill 3055 which guaranteed tolls will be imposed on I-205 as long as the freeway exists. Fischer didn’t answer when asked if she would sign a petition to require a public vote.

She also led the way to pay over $25,000 in legal expenses for her political ally, former Chair Jim Bernard when he was guilty of 2 ethics violations.

These examples, and many others are preserved in business meeting videos posted on the Clackamas County Commission website. During these tough times we need leaders we can rely on. Fischer reminds us of someone who has a credit card with no limits.

She’s clearly proven herself to be unelectable.
