Q & A Candidate Forum Featuring: Candidate Steve Bates, Senate District 26

Steve Bates, Candidate for Senate District 26

1. In a few sentences, state what position you are running for and why you believe you are the best candidate to win this election?

1. I am running for Senate District 26. District 26 stretches from The Dalles to Canby and includes all of Hood River County and portions of Clackamas, Multnomah and Wasco counties. I have lived in Clackamas County for 45 years and 70% of the population of Senate District 26 lives within a 35-mile radius of my Boring home. I am the only candidate that resides in the center of the core population of the district. As a result, I am in the best position to serve the people of Senate District 26.

2. What are the three most critical issues you plan to tackle once elected?

(A) Traffic Congestion – The Legislature must establish policy for ODOT to address the increasing traffic congestion on our state highways. (B) Mental Health Care Solutions – The Legislature must establish statewide policy that provides Mental Health Care when and where it is needed. (C) Vocational Education – The Legislature must encourage community colleges to expand vocational education programs.

3. When faced with difficult and complex issues in drafting public policy, what main factors will you consider when making decisions for the community at large?

I will ask these questions when looking at any public policy: (A) Is it Constitutional? (B) Will it violate or infringe on any of our God-given rights? (C) Does it conform to the Republican platform? (D) Do the majority of my constituents agree?

4. Do you believe voter fraud exists in the State of Oregon? If so, would you advocate for a state forensic audit in elections where questions about election integrity may exist?

I believe we need better control of the ballots. The mail-in system is fraught with problems as many ballots are delivered where the registered voter no longer lives and are subject to being completed by another person. While we have signature verification at county elections offices, the signature verification is not failsafe. I prefer that we go back to voting in person at a precinct and we have to provide identification to vote.

5. Please state your position regarding the issue of Right to Life and abortion.

I am Pro-Life. All life is precious and is a gift from God.

6. Fun facts and Trivia: What is your favorite meal, vacation spot and favorite all time movie?

Steak and Potatoes – The beach at Netarts, Oregon – Home Alone

7. Bonus question: do you have a motivational quote you would like to share?

“Trust But Verify!” — Ronald Reagan
