Snow Day

Marlon Furtado

Once again, our city has been struck with a snowstorm. The news channels today show the cars that were abandoned on the highways last night. Where do people go after they leave their cars? Do they hike down the highway until they come to an exit? Do they climb over the barriers and knock on someone’s door? The snow covering everything looks pretty during the daylight, but it brings a lot of problems for adults. Children, though, love to stay home from school to play in it.

Here are three examples of the positive attributes of snow in the Bible.

  • Snow pictures forgiveness

“‘Come now, let us reason together,’ says the Lord. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.’” (Isaiah 1:18)

Just as snow blankets everything, the blood which Jesus spilled on the cross completely covers our sin. And this snow will never melt. Our sin will never be exposed again. It is completely and forever covered when we receive Jesus as Savior and Lord.

  • Snow pictures the Word of God

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10–11)

Heavy snowfalls in the mountains insure that we have an adequate water supply through the summer. As you read the Word, some of your insights are for the immediate watering of your soul; some, like snow, are for the future.

  • Snow describes the risen Lord

“His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and His eyes were like blazing fire.” (Revelation 1:14)

Snow describes the purity and untainted holiness of the resurrected Christ.

Snowfalls still wreak havoc when we aren’t prepared for them. But they are also a reminder of our marvelous Savior and the salvation He offers.
