Steve Bates to seek appointment to vacated Senate Seat

Steve Bates

Long time Boring community leader, Steve Bates has announced his intention to seek the appointment to replace Senator Alan Olsen.  Senator Olsen, who resigned effective January 10, 2021 to attend to family matters, had served in the Senate District 20 seat for 10 years.  Senate District 20 includes portions of Boring, Eagle Creek, Estacada, Redland, Mulino, Oregon City, Canby, Barlow, the Charbonneau area of Wilsonville and a small portion of rural Aurora in Marion County.

Steve Bates wrote “He served Clackamas County with distinction over the past 10 years.  I worked with Senator Olsen on several projects and we were successful with the exception of increasing the property tax exemption for our wounded warriors and their widows.”
Steve Bates has been involved with the state legislature over the past several years advocating for the community of Boring and veterans issues.  17 pieces of legislation have been introduced at his request by several different legislators and over half of them received  unanimous bi-partisan votes.  Steve Bates said “I have developed relationships at the Capitol through the years and I look forward to expanding those relationships and adding to them.”
The replacement process requires a convention of the Senate District 20 Precinct Committee Persons.  The nominating convention will select a slate of candidates to be vetted by the Clackamas and Marion County commissioners.  The commissioners will make the appointment.  All of this is to happen within 30 days of the vacation of the office.

A publication and letter prepared for the Precinct Committee Persons states:  Steve Bates knows that to accomplish anything at the State Legislature, you must have bi-partisan support.  He plans to work on the following issues which can receive such support:  Transportation Issues for Clackamas County, Law & Order – Funding for the Oregon State Police and Clackamas County Sheriff, Veterans Issues and Mental Health Advocacy.
The appointee to replace Senator Olsen will serve on three Senate Committees:  Veterans & Emergency Preparedness, Labor & Business and Natural Resources  & Wildfire Recovery.
“These committee assignments are where I want to be as a Senator from Clackamas County.
Of course the assignment to the Veterans Committee is important to me.   In addition to advocating for our veterans, I will also be able to further the efforts to reclaim and activate the Willamette Falls Locks so that there is a navigable waterway from Portland to Salem in the event of a major catastrophe.  I founded two successful businesses and I will enjoy sharing my business acumen with the members of the Labor & Business Committee.  I also look forward to working on the Natural Resources committee to assist in the recovery from the devastation from the 2020 wildfires.”
To honor Senator Olsen’s legacy, Steve Bates also intends to support issues such as the Willamette Falls Legacy Project, community college funding and replacing the Clackamas County Courthouse.
“Through the years, it has been my privilege to advocate for my community.  It would be my honor to represent and advocate for my hometown and Clackamas County as the next Senator to represent Senate District 20.”  Steve Bates
