Keeper talks and up-close encounters will highlight the zoo’s feathered friends

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Oregon Zoo will celebrate World Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, May 13, highlighting the critical role birds play in ecosystems around the world and what we can do to help their declining populations. The event is part of the zoo’s new Animal Awareness Days series presented by Banfield Pet Hospital.

“Birds make the world a better place, and they need our help right now,” said Travis Koons, who oversees birds at the zoo. “Bird populations in North America have been in sharp decline recently. We can help them come back by creating safe, healthy spaces and being mindful of our impact on the environment.”

A full slate of keeper talks and up-close experiences with ambassador animals will highlight some of the zoo’s feathered friends and the ways we can help birds in our own backyard:

  • 9:45 a.m. – snowy owl keeper talk
  • 10:45 a.m. – raptor encounter (near Growler’s Pizza)
  • 11:30 a.m. – California condor keeper talk
  • 1 p.m. – waterfowl keeper talk (Cascade stream and pond habitat)
  • 1:30 p.m. – Vollum Aviary “snack toss”
  • 1:45 p.m. – raptor encounter (near Growler’s Pizza)
  • 2 p.m. – penguin keeper talk
  • 2:30 p.m. – migratory songbird keeper talk (Nature Exploration Station)

As part of Metro, the Oregon Zoo helps make greater Portland a great place to call home. Committed to conservation, the zoo is working to save endangered California condors, northwestern pond turtles, Oregon silverspot and Taylor’s checkerspot butterflies, and northern leopard frogs.

Support from the Oregon Zoo Foundation enhances and expands the zoo’s efforts in conservation, education and animal welfare. Members, donors and corporate and foundation partners help the zoo make a difference across the region and around the world. To contribute, go to oregonzoo.org/give.
